- 750 words: the ones that everyone who speaks the language uses every day.
- 2,500 words: you should be able to say everything you want to say, but you may need to get creative.
- 5,000 words: the working vocabulary of a native Portuguese speaker who has not gone to college.
You will be able to understand about 90% of everything written in Portuguese. - 10,000 words: the vocabulary of a native Portuguese speaker with a college degree.
- You need to be able to passively recognize 20,000 words to read, understand, and enjoy a book by a well-known author, such as a novel.
