This book is good, but you might need more words than the initial 2500. The frequency order helped me prioritize and retain words more easily. The concise definitions and example sentences were helpful for practical use. However, some words I needed were not included, and I had to use other resources. Overall, I recommend it for beginner to intermediate learners who want to strengthen their Czech vocabulary.

Longtime learner of Czech here. Dabbled in Duolingo and other free apps for a while until I got fed up with the slow progress. I've done a Michel Thomas audio course and then supplemented the missing gaps in vocabulary with this book. I am delighted, it works like a charm. Finally I'm getting the results I was looking for all those years. Wish I knew about these books years ago lol, ah well.

Not all words are created equal. Some words are used more than other words. The most common Czech words are more important to know than the more uncommon words.

Research has shown that the most used 2.500 Czech words account for 92% of all spoken language, and 82% of all written Czech texts.

This is quite impressive. Out of the 300.000 Czech words in current use, you only need to know the top 2.500 to be fluent enough for daily life.

What is Inside This Czech Dictionary?

A neatly organized Czech word list based on the most used Czech words. It gives you a structured way of quickly learning basic Czech vocabulary.

This book gives you a simple yet convenient way of learning Czech, providing you with common Czech words and phrases.

All raw data has been lemmatized. Some "frequency dictionaries" list conjugations of verbs and adjectives as separate entries. This dictionary does not. It lists only the root word.

All entries contain a Czech to English sample sentence so that you can see Czech words in context. It will also help you by giving you Czech reading practice. You will learn Czech by reading the sample sentences, too.

Czech pronunciation can sometimes be challenging. Because you want to know how to pronounce words correctly, we added phonetic transcriptions. We used the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) to spell words phonetically.

You can divide this Czech to English dictionary into three parts.

  • The general Czech frequency list. 2.500 Czech words ranked by how often they occur.

  • Frequency ranking by part of speech. We give you a frequency list of Czech nouns, adverbs, adjectives, verbs, prepositions, pronouns, numerals. This way, you can laser-target where you want to improve.

  • 2.500 Czech words in alphabetical order. If you forget a word, and you want to look up its meaning. Take a look at the alphabetical dictionary in the back of the book.
