Basic Portuguese Words

But thematic learning shouldn't be used as a way of starting lessons. Even though I do visit airports, most people speak English.

I would rather spend a few hours learning common words, and then laser-focus my attention to words that I will use, than try to learn random vocabulary.

Not making enough progress is very demotivating. This is the reason most people abandon learning a language.



How Many Portuguese Words Do You Need To Know?


These statistics and numbers cannot be accurately stated. These numbers represent the global average of multiple languages. Natural languages generally follow similar patterns when it comes to the amount of vocabulary that is used. This is the minimum number of words that you must know in order to attain different levels of fluency, according to research.

* 250 words. The essential core of a language is made up of the top 250 words. Without these words, it is impossible to construct meaningful sentences.

* 750 words. The top 750 words are used almost every day.

* 2,500 words. Even though you have the ability to express everything, it might take some creativity.

* 5,000 words. This is approximately the active vocabulary of a native English speaker who completed high school. About 90% of all written text will be understood by you.

* 10,000 words. This will be your active vocabulary, if you are a native speaker with higher education.

* 20,000 words. To be able to read, understand, or enjoy literature works, you'd need around 20,000 words.



How Many Portuguese Words Should I Learn Per Day?

It is recommended that you learn at least one new word per day. Even if you don't have much time, we recommend reviewing at least 10 words per day. Fluency will be much faster if you learn 30 words per day, instead of 10. 

Learn 20 words per day, and you can reach 1000 words in 50 days.

Learn 30 words per day within a month, and you will achieve 80% comprehension.

The most successful polyglots are able to learn 20 new words per day. This is a great combination of speed, time spent per day, and rapid, visible progress results.
