The good news? It's easy to reach a beginner level. In a matter of months, you can achieve conversational fluency. You can have conversations with locals in three months by completing intensive study.

So that you are able to anticipate what to expect, here's how we broke down different levels of Portuguese fluency.

This will help you understand why Portuguese adjectives should agree with nouns in number and gender. If a noun's singular, then the adjective should also be singular. The same applies to plural nouns as adjectives.

It is necessary to improve your basic Portuguese vocabulary. To start, you will need to have a solid foundation, and then work your way up to the most popular Portuguese words. This includes Portuguese verbs, Portuguese adjectives, as well as Portuguese nouns. You can use our frequency dictionaries to find reliable words for learning Portuguese. Portuguese words other than nouns, adjectives, verbs will become more useful as you get better at Portuguese. Focus should be on prepositions as well as adverbs.

Advanced Level Portuguese

You can polish the things you don't know or haven't practiced enough if you are above intermediate Portuguese. The language will become more natural to you, and you'll be able to speak it like a native Portuguese speaker. Vocabulary-wise, you'll learn Portuguese expressions that are frequently used by native speakers.

  • Portuguese idioms
  • Portuguese slang
  • Play on words and other linguistic humors in Portuguese

The primary focus of advanced Portuguese lessons is on the grammar:

Learn the difference between the Portuguese subjunctive and indicative moods. This mood allows you to express your desires, thoughts, hopes, and doubts. This mood can be found in all tenses of the Portuguese verb.

Advanced-level Portuguese knowledge will help you use the language more poetically and richly. Layered sentence constructions are possible. Layered sentences can have another phrase embedded within them, as I'm showing here. You will also be using more relative pronouns, such as "that which, or the one who".

Your Portuguese vocabulary will also be greatly expanded. There are many types of Portuguese vocabulary that you will learn in the advanced Portuguese course. You should be able to recognize the most common 5000 Portuguese words. This is the right time to acquire relevant vocabulary that suits your needs. These words might not be the most popular, but they are still useful because they relate to your interests and hobbies. Are you passionate about politics or sports? These terms can be described using the appropriate vocabulary. It's not limited to hobbies and interests. This could be business vocabulary or medical terms. Are you a hotel employee? Learn the relevant vocabulary for hotels. Carpenter? Find out more about woodworking.

There is so much vocabulary to learn. You might want to make your own Portuguese vocabulary lists depending on what is important to you. Your Portuguese vocabulary should be tailored to your interests, and you should fill in any gaps that need more words.

Learn Portuguese For Beginners: Basic Portuguese Lessons

Portuguese Vocabulary

Portuguese is a member of the Romance language family. Spanish is a Romance language too. That means it shares a common linguistic ancestor with other Romance languages. Other Romance languages are French, Italian, and Romanian. You'll find a lot of cognates across these given languages. Cognates are words that sound the same and have the same meaning.

Portuguese Pronunciation

Portuguese pronunciation can seem a little difficult for novice Portuguese speakers. You can make it easy with enough practice. Portuguese speakers are good at pronouncing foreign languages. This is because Portuguese has a harder pronunciation than other languages.

Portuguese pronunciation is much more straightforward. An educated guess will give you a good chance to pronounce the right words or phrases. In this sense, learning proper Portuguese pronunciation is much easier than understanding English pronunciation. Many words sound completely different when spelled in English.

How To Improve Your Portuguese Pronunciation?

Do not worry if your Portuguese pronunciation or accent isn't perfect. It takes practice and patience to get it right. Practice these pronunciation rules over and over again. This is the best way to retain them. Recording yourself reading and listening to the text can help you remember them. You can listen back to hear what you need to improve. You can learn correct Portuguese pronunciation by watching Portuguese movies and TV or by listening to Portuguese podcasts, radio, and podcasts. Soon you will sound like a native Portuguese speaker.

Basic Portuguese Phrases For Conversational Portuguese

If you want to speak Portuguese fluently, you must know certain expressions. These will help you navigate through a Portuguese conversation on auto-pilot.

The best place to start is with a simple "Olá"! There are many common greetings in Portuguese to choose from.

  • bom Dia - good day or good morning
  • boa tarde - good afternoon or good evening
  • boa noite - good night

You'll get familiar with basic Portuguese phrases like:

  • Como você está? - how are you?

Now for the game, set and match, try:

  • prazer em conhecê-la! Como você está? - nice to meet you! How are you?

If you meet someone for the first time, you'll probably want to make small talk. You introduce yourself and exchange where you come from. To say your name, you can say:

  • Meu nome é [your name] - My name is ..
  • eu sou [your name] - I am ..

To find out the names of other people in Portuguese, you can ask:

  • qual o seu nome? - what 's your name?

The way to say where you come from in Portuguese is "eu sou de [location]". If you want to ask where someone is from, you can say:

  • De onde você é? - where are you from?
  • Onde você mora? - where do you live?

To say goodbye in Portuguese, you can say:

  • adeus - goodbye
  • vê você - see you
  • vejo você em breve - see you soon

There are many other useful conversational Portuguese words, phrases, and expressions you'll get to know as you learn Portuguese. Good manners come a long way in Portugal!

  • não mencione isso - don't mention it
  • Desculpe-me - excuse me

These Portuguese expressions, phrases, and phrases are easy to learn. You can then learn more similar phrases to help you communicate with native Portuguese speakers.

What's The Quickest Way To Start Learning Portuguese?

There is no right or wrong way to learn a foreign language. Four types of learning styles are common. You can learn Portuguese best if you are aware of your learning style.

VISUAL LEARNERS

You are likely to be a visual learner if you can learn information the best by seeing it in illustrations, photos, meaningful symbols, figures, videos or animation.

AUDITORY/AURAL LEARNERS

Auditory and auditory learners learn best when they hear the information. Auditory learning works in a two-way fashion. This learning category includes students who can communicate and learn from each other. They can and will do best in group activities. Reading your written work aloud may benefit you and help you think and reflect.

READING/WRITING LEARNERS

Students who do best in reading and writing have a strong appreciation for the written word. This type is also more inclined to research online. You can find a variety of information-rich websites that are composed of a lot of text.

KINESTHETIC LEARNERS

Kinesthetic learners learn hands-on and actively. To get the best educational outcome, they need to be actively involved in the learning process. Sometimes they are called "tactile learners". It could be a bit misleading. Kinesthetic learners don't just use touch; they engage all their senses in the learning process.

Now that you are familiar with your learning style, there are still many options available. It can be hard to find the right way to learn Portuguese. You will find that the most efficient and natural way to learn Portuguese can be the fastest. Perhaps you dislike reading from a book. You might find flashcards boring or you hate learning from a textbook. You would prefer to find and stick with a method that is more fun or engaging. Understanding yourself is key to success.

Millions of people are fluent in Portuguese, which they have acquired from other languages. There will be people who have used many resources to learn Portuguese. Some source materials can be free, while others are reasonably inexpensive. While some are cheaper, others might produce faster results. There is no single "best" combination. It's up to you to decide which Portuguese learning techniques work best for your particular situation.

Here are some easy ways to quickly learn Portuguese. Use the 80/20 rule.

  • First, learn the most popular words.
  • Get a grasp of basic grammar.

Next, you will need to gain more detailed knowledge in order to apply your skills.

  • Either in a group setting or one-on-1 with a tutor.
  • You can take paid or non-paid online Portuguese classes, courses, software, or applications
  • Portuguese media resources: podcasts playlists books movies TV shows and movies

Ways To Learn And Practice Portuguese

Learning Portuguese In The Classroom

The Portuguese language is one of the most popular languages at universities and schools around the world. For students at university or grade school, the best way to learn is in a classroom setting. It allows for intensive and regular study if you are taking Portuguese classes. Teachers can also give feedback. Teachers can help correct errors and teach the language interactively. It is valuable to have other language learners who speak Portuguese and can practice with you.

A large percentage of classroom learners are younger students. Adults also enroll in Portuguese language classes. There are many language classes available in most major cities, and they can be free or very cheap. You'll find them everywhere if you're learning a popular language like Portuguese. We understand that a full-time job may limit your availability. You can improve your Portuguese language skills by attending a Portuguese class after work, or on weekends. Even if you only go once or twice per week, it can help improve your Portuguese language skills.

Learning Portuguese With A Private Tutor

Private tutoring provides a more customized and flexible learning experience than classroom learning. It provides many of the benefits of classroom learning. A skilled tutor in Portuguese will help you make rapid progress. A teacher can help improve your pronunciation. Your tutor can help you identify the areas of Portuguese that are causing you trouble. You can quickly improve your skills by having access to this resource. One of the biggest drawbacks to group learning is that the teacher has to divide his or her attention among several students. Portuguese tutoring doesn’t have to be complicated. Many tutoring sessions can now be done via video call, rather than face-to-face.

What is the drawback to private tutors? Private tutors are often expensive. Private instruction can prove prohibitive for many Portuguese students. Highly-trained master tutors can charge very high hourly rates for their lessons. It can be hard to find a high-quality tutor that doesn't cost too much.

Portuguese Language Courses, Apps, And Online Software

There are many high-quality, expertly-designed courses and programs online in Portuguese available in 2022. (make sure you read the reviews first!) The prices range between very reasonable and extremely expensive. These Portuguese courses are flexible and allow you to study at your own pace. These courses are usually more interactive and fun than free Portuguese resources. The money spent is usually well-worth it. I would rather progress faster than spend time learning irrelevant information. A lot of the best products have constantly been updated with new content. This will ensure that you receive the best possible learning experience.

Can You Learn Portuguese For Free?

The short answer is yes. But it will take you a lot more time and be more exhausting. Perhaps you are a beginner with a limited budget. You still have many options if you are willing to spend more time searching for and working with free or cheaper content.

Language Exchange: Learning Portuguese With Tandem Partners

Tandem learning allows two people to share their native languages and learn together. They take on the roles of student and teacher respectively, and teach each other their native language. If both parties are able to devote significant time and thought, a language swap is an effective way to exchange languages. Remember that not everyone can be a teacher. It can often be more difficult than you think to explain why your language works the way that it does. While you may understand English grammar implicitly and be able to use it flawlessly every day, there are times when you don't. This does not necessarily mean that you will be able to explain grammar rules to a nonnative speaker.

Full Portuguese Immersion Programs

Total immersion in Portuguese is the most intense and intensive option. It's not suitable for everyone. This is the fastest way to learn Portuguese quickly. It will allow you to learn Portuguese 24 hours a day. You'll learn English quickly if you refuse to speak English. You will make rapid progress if you fully immerse yourself in a foreign culture or place, such as Brazil, Cape Verde, Macau. You will struggle to understand and communicate with those around you in Portuguese if you don't speak English. You can't improve your skills faster than the necessity of it.

It's also one of the most expensive. Consider airfare, rent, as well as all the other costs associated with traveling. You have the option to participate in a Portuguese immersion program, or you can book a flight and find an Airbnb.

However, it is important to have a basic knowledge of Portuguese before you move. These resources can help you prepare for a major transition.

  • Learning the most common words with the MostUsedWords Portuguese Frequency Dictionaries.
  • Understanding the most crucial Portuguese grammar with Quickstudy charts.
  • Getting the hang of speaking and listening with an audio method.
  • Doing an (online) language exchange with native Portuguese speakers
  • Perhaps even taking some Portuguese classes.

There are plenty of Portuguese learning resources available that will help you fluently learn Portuguese. Most of them are accessible online or through a library. They do not need to be expensive. They are easy to find and often affordable. You can even get a subscription to streaming services like Netflix or Spotify to improve your Portuguese. You may already pay for these services.

Books To Learn Portuguese

If you love reading, you are in luck. There are many Portuguese books that will help you learn Portuguese. Numerous Portuguese books are available as great learning resources. They vary in difficulty. You will find everything, from short stories and comics for beginners to more complicated works of literature.

To improve your reading abilities, it is worth reading books that teach Portuguese. Learn words from context to expand your vocabulary. It allows you to see how the Portuguese language is used in many contexts. From fairy tales and historical fiction, to essays and short stories, to nonfiction and everything else in between.

It is possible to read books in Portuguese and learn at your own pace. It is a good idea to look for books with grading. To find the correct Portuguese words, you don't need a dictionary to help you through a book.

You might also consider bilingual books. These are also known as parallel text books. They can be used side-by-side to have the English translation and the Portuguese translation. This means you don't need to spend your time looking for obscure words in a Dictionary and you can still read the book you love.

What should you do if words are unfamiliar to you? Keep a dictionary of unfamiliar words or expressions. These words should be considered important enough to learn. Then, review them periodically. It builds your vocabulary.

Here is another tip. By reading the book aloud, you can practice your Portuguese pronunciation. Listen to the recording and make sure you listen again for additional listening practice.

Learning Portuguese With Podcasts, Songs, And Audio Methods

To practice Portuguese, it's a great idea to listen to podcasts in Portuguese language. You will hear the natural patterns, accents and inflections that native Portuguese speakers would use. Sometimes, learning from textbooks can seem too formal.

There are podcasts for beginners that teach Portuguese grammar and vocabulary. There are also podcasts for advanced storytelling and intermediate Portuguese grammar. There are plenty of Portuguese podcasts that you can choose from, many of which are free. Portuguese podcast tips to learners: You can slow down podcasts to improve your listening skills. Active listening can be another option. You can also focus more on the podcast, and not just the background.

I love passive learning. Listening to Portuguese songs is similar to tuning in to Portuguese podcasts. Listening to either one can be done while driving, walking or on the road. It can be played in the background while you prepare dinner, while walking your dog, or while you exercise. Songs often have the chorus or hook repeated several times. This can give you a lot of exposure and allows you to hear the lyrics many times.

Life pro tip: Spotify offers many playlists that feature Portuguese songs, organized by skill level. There are beginner and advanced playlists for Portuguese.

Remember the following. You must learn more than listening to a language to master it. Audio learning should be supplemented with other methods. Make sure you listen to podcasts that include transcripts. To practice reading the lyrics, locate them. To make it easier to remember unknown words and phrases, keep a notepad handy. You can review these terms later.

Learning With Portuguese TV Shows And Movies

It is a great way to learn Portuguese by watching Portuguese TV and movies. It's a simple and effective way to learn Portuguese. You will find plenty of great material in all genres. All skill levels can find content. You will find plenty of content on streaming services such as Amazon Prime and Netflix. The animated movies are great for beginners learning Portuguese. You will enjoy more adult-oriented films if you prefer to read complex, plot-heavy stories. Also, the dialogues are often written in more advanced Portuguese.

You can display subtitles in Portuguese if you want to practice reading when watching videos. Do not view media in Portuguese if it is dubbed into English. Stop watching if the dialogue is too fast. Give yourself the chance to understand and process what is being said. Keep track of unfamiliar words in your language diary, and refer to them later. You don't have to take the whole thing in one go when you are learning Portuguese through TV and movies. This allows your brain to get some rest.

Where to Find Free Online Portuguese Classes, Software, And Apps?

You can find plenty of free Portuguese content on the internet. You can also find apps for your smartphone. You can find wikis that relate to Portuguese grammar or vocabulary. There are many forums. You can also find free classes online in Portuguese. There's something for everybody. You're sure to find something that suits your needs from all of these options.

Some options are better than others. There are differences in how the methods are organized and how they explain concepts. Before you commit to anything, read the reviews. You shouldn't start just because the item looks interesting at first glance. (I'm speaking of random vocabulary lists on Pinterest!).

Beware, buyers! There is a trade-off when you buy products. They may not be as good as the product. Most of the Portuguese app source material is derived from user-generated translations. Another large amount comes from freely-available sources. They are usually useless for learners. This is because we looked at several sources, for example sentences in frequency dictionaries. These sentences are not often checked for accuracy. These translations are often very loose or filled with errors.

These lessons can often be very basic and unorganized. They might waste your time and teach completely irrelevant lessons. You might get annoying, time-wasting advertisements or your data if they offer you a free application. Learning material development requires expertise, time, money, and time. You can't give it away for free, if you spend a lot of money to make the courses.

They can be very helpful, but I don't think so. They can be extremely helpful. But it is important to be able to identify the best places and how to fill your gaps in your language learning. All content is not equal in quality and you will often receive what you pay for.

Portuguese Flashcards And Phrasebooks

You can find a lot of learning material online and offline that will teach you basic Portuguese phrases, words, and expressions. You might also find it offline. Yes, there are still bookstores that offer foreign language education. These flashcards in Portuguese are very popular. These flashcards can be found on sites like Quizlet or Anki. These flashcards can be downloaded wherever you are. These flashcards in Portuguese are great for improving your memory retention and retaining the most important terms.

Note: These flashcards are problematic, because the source material used for their construction is very poor. Although it may not always be so, I would only trust three of all the available apps. We are currently developing our Flashcard app. Keep checking back!

The Portuguese phrase books can also be used to quickly learn Portuguese phrases. This is a fast way to learn sentences native Portuguese speakers use every day. These sentences will allow you to practice the most important words and phrases that you should say in Portuguese.

  • Meeting new people
  • Order at restaurants or bars
  • Finding your way through unfamiliar areas

Phrasebooks are great because they provide complete sentences and language chunks that can be learned at once. This allows you to quickly reach a speaking level. You can learn languages in chunks with the chunking method. Our frequency dictionaries also have sample sentences, but they're not as specific as sentences that you can learn from a phrasebook.

Tip: Keep a small Portuguese phrasebook handy for when you travel. This makes traveling easier. It is also great for light reading and vocabulary practice during commuting, such as when you are driving.

Flashcards and phrasebooks in Portuguese are useful learning tools. However, they won't teach you how Portuguese is used in real-life conversations. You'll need practice with these phrases in real Portuguese conversations to be able to do this. It might seem strange to speak Portuguese to yourself at first. It is not something I recommend on public transport. It is a great way for you to put into practice what you have learned.
