Italian Vocabulary List

How Many Italian Words Do You Actually Need?

Italian has well over 100,000 words in the dictionary. You don't need most of them. Research on word frequency shows that the most common 1,000 words cover the large majority of everyday spoken Italian — and the most common 2,500 cover even more.

That's the idea behind frequency-based learning: instead of memorizing vocabulary lists at random, you learn words in the order you'll actually use them. Our frequency dictionaries are organized by CEFR level (A1 through C2+), so you always know exactly where you stand and what to learn next.

Below you'll find the full vocabulary collection, organized from essential beginner words through master-level vocabulary — everything you need to go from your first Italian word to genuine fluency.
