Newsletter 1 - Updates on Books and Flashcard App

Exciting news!

The MostUsedWords Flashcard App is in the works. I will discuss it further down in this post. First I want to tell you about the updates on our frequency dictionaries and our bilingual books.

In general: The frequency lists will be updated. There will be easier sentences, only direct translations instead of idioms,  and multiple sentences if a word has multiple possible translations (homonyms).

In the works:

  • Sebastien is working on the 2nd edition of the French dictionaries. Currently at 3500/10.000 entries.

  • Eva is working on the 2nd edition of the German frequency dictionaries.

  • Lydia is working on the Mandaring Chinese dictionaries. She is at 2100 out of 10.000 entries. I hope to release the first book in about 3 months.

  • The Bulgarian series is at 3500/10.000 entries.

  • The Swedish series is being reworked from the ground up by Per. It doesn’t resemble the 1st series at all, so it’ll be a complete restart instead of a 2nd edition.

  • Finnish is also around 2500 entries now. Teija is doing a great job.

Serbian has been delayed. I hope to have it ready by Christmas, but no guarantees.

Awaiting funding:

  • Russian
  • Korean
  • Japanese
  • Hungarian

Updates regarding bilingual books:

I had some realizations about the difficulty level of books. Often, they were too difficult even for advanced language learners. So Gareth is working on making them easier to read. I’ve been very impressed with his editing so far.

Gareth just finished the book The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. I’m translating it to Dutch, and Natalia is reworking the translation to Portuguese after she finishes with Raggedy Ann. If Eva has some time to squeeze it in while reworking the 2nd edition of the German frequency dictionaries, that would be awesome too!

Next month, he will start on H.P’s Lovecraft’s The Call of Cthulhu and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Raggedy Ann has been translated to German. It’s easy to read. It’s almost ready, and I need to get it to the printer ASAP.

The most important change this year:

But here’s the thing. For MostUsedWords to evolve and provide more value to the language language (you), I need to start creating the MostUsedWords app.

In the past few months, I’ve been working on the technical spec and creating wireframes (mockups of how it will look like and what functions should be included).

Currently, I’m in talks with 5 app developers and I’m quite taken aback about a few things. So, I will make a video talking about the MostUsedWords app to tell you more about it soon. But for now, I’d love to hear your feedback on what features you’d like to see, and what ones can be excluded.

Best wishes,

Edmond @ MostUsedWords.
