Why Should You Learn the Most Used Czech Words First?

Not every word has the same value. Some words are more useful to know because they are used more often. The best fastest way to learn a language is to learn the right words first.

Studies have shown that the top 2,500 words make up 92 percent of all spoken Czech and 82 percent of all written Czech. The top 5.000 words list for roughly %95 and 90% and the top 10k words account for 98 and 97%. In modern day Czech, there are about 150.000 words in current use. At some point, you'll see diminishing returns, and it is wiser to learn specific vocabulary relevant to your situation. Work in finance? Learn related vocabulary. Going to study medicine abroad? Learn relevant words for your situation.

How Many Czech Words Should You Know?

It's important to remember that these numbers and statistics can't be known for sure, but this is the average of many different sources from around the world.

Research shows that different levels of fluency require different amounts of vocabulary:
  • 250 words: a language's most important parts. You can't make sentences without these words.
  • 750 words: the ones that everyone who speaks the language uses every day.
  • 2,500 words: you should be able to say everything you want to say, but you may need to get creative.
  • 5,000 words: the working vocabulary of a native Czech speaker who has not gone to college.
    You will be able to understand about 90% of everything written in Czech.
  • 10,000 words: the vocabulary of a native Czech speaker with a college degree.
  • You need to be able to passively recognize 20,000 words to read, understand, and enjoy a book by a well-known author, such as a novel.
