It's important to remember that these numbers and statistics can't be known for sure, but this is the average of many different sources from around the world.Research shows that different levels of fluency require different amounts of vocabulary:
- 250 words: a language's most important parts. You can't make sentences without these words.
- 750 words: the ones that everyone who speaks the language uses every day.
- 2,500 words: you should be able to say everything you want to say, but you may need to get creative.
- 5,000 words: the working vocabulary of a native Czech speaker who has not gone to college.
You will be able to understand about 90% of everything written in Czech.
- 10,000 words: the vocabulary of a native Czech speaker with a college degree.
- You need to be able to passively recognize 20,000 words to read, understand, and enjoy a book by a well-known author, such as a novel.
